Nerd Credentials

I am a nerd at least that is what I am told. Even in high school I was picked on for it. I don’t know if I would say I was bullied but I was defiantly picked on. Even to this day I am a nerd though and now a days I am not even scared to admit it.

Lets review the facts.

  1. I like comic books
  2. I like comic movies
  3. I love computers
  4. I love gadgets
  5. I like to work on computers
  6. I like Star Wars and Star Trek

Lets talk about comic books and the movies that go along with them. I collect comics and I like going to the comic stores. I have been collecting comic books since I was 10 or 11. I have seen every movie that is based of a comic book even if it is a bad version. As we speak I am watching “Daredevil” staring Ben Affleck. So that should say something.

My favorite comic book movies are as follows:

  1. Iron Man
  2. Batman (Christopher Nolan)
  3. Batman (Tim Burton)
  4. Spiderman
  5. A History of Violence
  6. Blade
  7. Sin City
  8. Hell Boy
  9. The Incredibles (not really a comic book movie but it might as well be)

Worst Comic Book Movie has to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

I am not going to debate which is better Star Wars or Star Trek because I am not that guy. My opinion doesn’t matter to that many people so why should I try to make people who have already have made up there mind.

I am going to school for Computer Networking. I will graduate with an Associate’s Degree in May. I have been messing around with computers since I was very young, I can’t give you a certain age because I don’t really remember. I remember having a Commodore 64.

So those are my Nerd credentials.

If you have any questions just ask and I will reply.

Comic Con Dreams

I am wanting to attend my first Comic Con but I never been to one. I would love to go to COMIC CON in San Diego but I can’t afford it this year. I also think I should start off small. There are a couple that I have been looking into but I am not sure. My wife says she will go with me but I can tell she really doesn’t want to. I had a friend who I am sure would have went but he moved to the other side of the country. So here I am a nerd that doesn’t have any nerdy friends. Don’t get me wrong I have friends, I have the best friends in the world, I am just saying they are not nerds who would enjoy a comic con.

I am not even sure what goes on at a Comic Con. So if someone wanted to fill me in what happens there i would appreciate it. I know some things from looking on the World Wide Web but I want to hear about some experiences. I really want to have my own experiences.

So I am thinking that if I can’t find a partner in crime to go with me I am going to drag my wife along. I don’t think she will enjoy it but she is a trooper and will try to have a good time. She will take pictures of me with people and characters.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time that we can see our families, relax, over eat, watch football, be thankful for what we have. That sounds like a really good deal. So before I go on I would like to say that this type of Thanksgiving sounds really really nice.

No for me I am a child of a divorced mother and father and typically this doesn’t bother me, so don’t feel bad and I realize that I am far from being the only one. If I did what all my family wanted me to on this holiday then I would be at my mom’s sides dinner about noon, and my dad’s side about 2:00 and that sounds doable.

Here is where the problems start I am also a married man and we need to attend my wife’s family also. So her mom’s side of the family is at noon, and her dad’s side is usually at 4:30 but this year they changed this to 2:00. So if you are following along you can see that we are supposed to attend 4 family dinners at the pretty much the same time.

How are you supposed to relax with this? Family members get their feelings hurt when you don’t attend but it is impossible to attend all of them. So we try to go to 3 of the 4, all though I feel bad because I don’t attend my mom’s side.

I figure that all I can do is attend what I can and hope the others don’t feel to bad even though I know they are hurt. I need to try to spend more time with them through out the year and that way when I don’t come on Thanksgiving they wont miss me as much.

Oh what am I to do? I will figure this out and have a good holiday. Hope everyone that reads this has a Great Thanksgiving.

I am slacking

When I started this blog I told myself that I wanted to post something every other day at least. I look at it now and I see that I havent posted anything for weeks. I am just becoming a huge slacker.

So lets fill you in:

I am still working full-time and at least 10 hours of overtime every week. I am still a full-time student, I have 15 credit hours this semester I think. Everything is starting to run together.

My work is going good and my grades are good, I would like to improve one class. I am not failing I just want a better grade.

The other day our instructor informed us that per the new rule at the school that we are now required to take out A+ certification test before the end of the Semester. I was angry about that and still am. This certification has know effect on our grade so they shouldnt be able to require us to take the test. I am going to take the test anyway because I want to be certified.

Oh well sorry about this random post but it is getting late and I just finished up some homework and got a ton more to do.

So until next time…

stress release

I find that working full-time and being a full-time student can be extremely stressful. Trying to get all of my work done along with homework and everything that needs to be done around the house is hard to do. I am always trying to find things to help me unload some of my stress so I don’t have a meltdown or blow up at someone. So what should I do? Here are a few things I find help:

  1. Classical Music: Sometimes when I listen to it and it is all I can hear it seems like I can handle anything. I don’t know what it does but this type of music is really something special.
  2. Small trips: Trips like a day trip or even a weekend trips are nice because it lets you get away from work and school. While away it is important not to think about anything that stress you out.
  3. Breathing: When I am stressed out at work I find that taking 20 seconds of me time helps. I will sit there in my chair, close my eyes and take 10 deep breaths and just let the air fill my lungs and then slowly exhale. When I am done and I reopen my eyes everything seems to be a little better.
  4. Screaming out loud and as loud as you can: Now this one sounds really goofy and I can’t even start to imagine what the neighbors would think. So the way I do this is I jump into my pool and go under water and just scream. I will come up to refill my lungs and then it is back under to scream so more. Now like I said this sounds weird but it does something amazing.
  5. Watching a movie: Doing this lets your mind just rest and watch the movie. If you are like me then you will not think about work and you will just pay attention to what is on the screen. It doesn’t matter what type you watch. Horror, comedy, drama, etc. each type will give you a little escape from reality.
  6. listening to comedians: They always say laughter is the best cure. I do believe this to be true. I listen to Pandora’s Comedy radio while working and it does wonders. It not only gives me something to listen to, it makes the day go by faster. The only problem is I think my co-workers might think I am insane because I just laugh out loud sometimes. Hey I can’t help it, I laugh when something is funny.
  7. Golfing: Whether it be playing around of golf or just going to the driving range and hitting balls this always seems to relax me. Hitting balls probably relaxes me more, due to the fact that I am not that good of a golfer. I get mad at myself after almost every shot but at the end of the day I realize that I had fun and I am pretty relaxed.
  8. Shopping: This will release some stress but only if you have the money. When I say money I mean cash or money in the bank to pay for it, I don’t mean putting it on a credit card. If you have the money to spare and you want to buy something then do it. I find that it makes me very happy when I buy something that I want, but if you are putting it on credit then you will still be happy until you get the bill and realize that you have to pay for it.

Now I am not an expert on stress relief and I still get really stressed out. I am just trying to share some of the techniques I have found to help me. It is important to blow off some steam occasionally but when you do, do it in a safe way.

Hulu Plus Vs Netflix

I have looked and looked through out the internet trying to find out which is better by everyone’s opinion. I haven’t been able to find one site that has given me a straight answer so I am going to test this myself.

A little background to start us of. It has been over a year since we have had cable TV in our house, we have survived with the help of Netflix, Traditional Movie Rental, Hulu (not Hulu Plus), and Network TV. I have been a Netflix customer for many years, and I like Netflix. I don’t like that they have raised prices though but that doesnt really affect me anyways.

So the test, I am going to start me a Hulu Plus account today. I am going to use Hulu and Netflix so I can do a even comparison. I will give weekly blogs with my findings.

Downtown Dinner

Today at lunch a co-worker and I wanted to try something different to eat so we looked through the internet trying to find a nice small place to try. We came across this place called “Downtown Dinner”, we read reviews and decided to give it a shot. The reviews we decent about 5 good and 2 bad. It is located in Henderson, KY at 122 1st Street. We pull up and look at the building it is nothing to write home about but when you enter the dinner it is a modern looking building with big windows facing the road. It has 3 old time speakers are the only things in the place that tie it back to dinners from back in the day.

The waitress asked us if we would like to see what was on the buffet for the day and walked us to it. They had a salad bar, and on the hot buffet was Fried Chicken, Pot Roast, Catfish Fillets, Mashed potatoes, corn, peas, green beans, 2 kinds of gravy, lima beans, rolls, biscuits, and pancakes. It looked delightful, we found a table and sat down the waitress handed us menus. She asked what we wanted to drink and told us that they served RC cola. We told her what we wanted she left to give us time to think about the menu. We looked at the menus and this place has great prices for 5.99 you can get fried chicken livers with 2 sides and that is how the prices for most items were.

After surveying the menu we decided on the buffet and all I can say is wow. I had the catfish and it is probably the best catfish I have EVER had. A friendly waitstaff, good food, good prices, this place isn’t missing anything. The only thing that I can say bad about this place is I ate way to much and I am now ready for a nap. I am sure we will go back and take more people with us.

I have to say that if you are in Henderson, KY and are looking for some food go to the “Downtown Dinner” you will not regret it.

Life with out Cable TV

About a year ago we decided that we didn’t need or want to pay for cable tv any more. I said we didn’t need it, we still wanted it though. With the technology that is out there today is it nessecary to pay for cable tv. What other choices does one have?

  1. Netflix ($7.99 a month for streaming)
  2. Hulu (free through you computer)
  3. Hulu Plus ($7.99 a month for streaming)
  4. Amazon Movies
  5. Apple
  6. Xbox
  7. PS3
  8. Network TV (free)
  9. Traditional Movie Rental ($2 per new release per night)
  10. Red Box ($1 per movie per night)
  11. for more options click the following http://gizmodo.com/5366161/life-without-cable-or-satellite-tv-is-easier-than-you-think

So at first living with out cable wasn’t fun, there was nothing ever on TV (not that there was on cable) and we missed certain channels and shows. TLC, SYFY, Discovery they are still missed but there is a lot out there I could care less to ever see again. We decided that we could make it on the movies we owned, network HD television, and netflix. To be honest it wasnt that hard. We found some old tv series that we wanted to watch and we worked are ways through the seasons. We have watched things like Buffy The Vampire Hunter, Sons of Anarchy, Firefly, Fastlane, etc. I enjoy watching shows this way no commercials, I can watch them on my schedule.

Now it seems like Netflix is making it a little harded with changing the pricing plan but to be honest we don’t use the DVD service anyways. I mailed in our last DVD the other day and we hadn’t even watched it and it had been sitting by the TV for 5 months. So we were paying for something we weren’t using anyway.

What would be nice is if cable providers would allow you to pick the stations you want and pay per station. I would take advantage of this since I only want like 6 or 7 channels, do I really need to have 250 channels that I can not find anything on them to watch? I don’t think so.

I have thus learned that out of everything out there that people can get addicted to TV has to be one of the worst. It keeps you from doing what needs to be done, spending time talking with loved ones and all of the fun stuff that can be done. We still get sucked into shows and don’t want to do those things but we are saving $60 a month at the least which is nice.

Picnic for two

Lately with school and all of the overtime I have been working I have decide that I am going to try to do something romantic this weekend to show my wife what she means to me. I am thinking a romantic picnic for two is the way to go. I have wanted to do this for a while but have never done it.

I am trying to find a nice secluded location that we can go and then after are lunch still have time to play frisbee or anything we can do together. In the city I live we have parks but on a nice day there is going to be a lot of people there. I could take her on a drive and find a place but are they going to be busy. I would like to find a place that either has a great view or a small creek with the sound of running water. A place we can let the worries of the world melt away.

If there is one thing I can say about myself is that I am nerd and I am always plugged in. So one more thing I am going to do is unplug, I am going to turn my phone off so I can not be bothered.

What food should I take? This question is the one that is tough to figure out, should I go out and pick up some nice bread and some cheese, a bottle of wine, or would it be better to take some finger sandwiches and fresh fruit like strawberries and grapes. decisions, decisions

I want this to work so we can just have a day that is just her and I. A day where we can talk and just renew our love for each other. I already know that I have the most loving, beautiful, smart wife in the world. I need to start working to show how much she means to me.

  1. Stuff needed for a picnic
  2. Utensils
  3. Glasses
  4. Wine
  5. Food
  6. Desert
  7. A blanket to sit on
  8. Frisbee
  9. A radio for some light music
  10. A backback to pack everything in

And the major thing a great location to create a new memory at.

If there is one things all guys should know it is treat you wife, girlfriend, partner how they deserve to be treated. Show them that you love them every chance you get. Sneak a kiss when you can. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to show how much you care. The big things are not always the best things you can do, it is the little everyday things that is the glue to the relationship.

Where does it all go

I work and work and then I work some more. I know there are people out there who work more than I do. My dad is one of those people, but we are not talking about him today. Today we are going to talk about where does it all go. What is it? It is everything, from money to time.

Have you ever noticed that there is never enough time in the day to get everything done that needs to be. I know for me when I get home from a workday that has me away from my wife and house from 6:45 in the morning until 5:30 in the evening that I don’t really want or feel that I have the energy to do anything. I can sit on the couch and eat or watch tv but mostly that is about it. So that means typically yard work, gardening, exercise (LOL), cleaning all get put off until the weekend. Then when the weekend rolls around there is not enough time to get it all done.

So lets look at where all the time goes:

  1. Work
  2. School
  3. running erands
  4. sleep

Hmmm. I am not really seeing anything that I can do with out. I guess I am going to have to start finding every little ammount of time I can and do the things that need to be done.

Now we make it to the money portion where does all the money go. I am working 50 hour weeks so I am getting paid for 10 hours of overtime. When I set up a budget (I did mine using excel) I can afford all my bills working a normal week. If you would like me to send you an example let me know. So where is the rest of the money.

I am a gadget lover I want to have all of the newest and best. I havent bought any gadgets in a long time the last thing I bout was my iPad. I can’t honestly say where the money is going but I know some of it is from eating out. I am going to have to sit down and actually start thinking more and more about what I am buying.

Tips I have came up with to stop the impulse buying.

  1. if you see something that you want, wait 24 hours to buy it. Make sure you really need it.
  2. Make a list when shopping and only buy what is on the list. (sounds easy)
  3. Stay out of the electronic section

So if I can teach myself to do these 3 tips it should really help me out with impulse purchases.
