Nerd Credentials

I am a nerd at least that is what I am told. Even in high school I was picked on for it. I don’t know if I would say I was bullied but I was defiantly picked on. Even to this day I am a nerd though and now a days I am not even scared to admit it.

Lets review the facts.

  1. I like comic books
  2. I like comic movies
  3. I love computers
  4. I love gadgets
  5. I like to work on computers
  6. I like Star Wars and Star Trek

Lets talk about comic books and the movies that go along with them. I collect comics and I like going to the comic stores. I have been collecting comic books since I was 10 or 11. I have seen every movie that is based of a comic book even if it is a bad version. As we speak I am watching “Daredevil” staring Ben Affleck. So that should say something.

My favorite comic book movies are as follows:

  1. Iron Man
  2. Batman (Christopher Nolan)
  3. Batman (Tim Burton)
  4. Spiderman
  5. A History of Violence
  6. Blade
  7. Sin City
  8. Hell Boy
  9. The Incredibles (not really a comic book movie but it might as well be)

Worst Comic Book Movie has to Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.

I am not going to debate which is better Star Wars or Star Trek because I am not that guy. My opinion doesn’t matter to that many people so why should I try to make people who have already have made up there mind.

I am going to school for Computer Networking. I will graduate with an Associate’s Degree in May. I have been messing around with computers since I was very young, I can’t give you a certain age because I don’t really remember. I remember having a Commodore 64.

So those are my Nerd credentials.

If you have any questions just ask and I will reply.

Comic Con Dreams

I am wanting to attend my first Comic Con but I never been to one. I would love to go to COMIC CON in San Diego but I can’t afford it this year. I also think I should start off small. There are a couple that I have been looking into but I am not sure. My wife says she will go with me but I can tell she really doesn’t want to. I had a friend who I am sure would have went but he moved to the other side of the country. So here I am a nerd that doesn’t have any nerdy friends. Don’t get me wrong I have friends, I have the best friends in the world, I am just saying they are not nerds who would enjoy a comic con.

I am not even sure what goes on at a Comic Con. So if someone wanted to fill me in what happens there i would appreciate it. I know some things from looking on the World Wide Web but I want to hear about some experiences. I really want to have my own experiences.

So I am thinking that if I can’t find a partner in crime to go with me I am going to drag my wife along. I don’t think she will enjoy it but she is a trooper and will try to have a good time. She will take pictures of me with people and characters.

Required Testing

I must rant for a short time. I have been trying not to put it on here but it has been about 3 months now and this still bothers me.

We all know that I am a full-time student, full-time worker and husband. So this rant is about the college I attend. I am going to school for Information Technology with a concentration on Networking. If you know anything about IT then you know that you can get certified in certain areas (A+, Server +, Network +, etc.) Typically you can take a class and then you have time to study and when you are ready you can take your certification test. When YOU ARE READY.

My school decided that it would be a good idea to wrap the cost of the testing into your tuition and require the test be taken before the semester is over. Now why this does save me from having to pay for the test myself they are still getting us. Normally when you pay for the testing you have a year to take your chance. My classes are 8 weeks long and when I buy the testing I have to take the test in that 8 weeks. You are not even finished with the class when you are required to take the test.

Then you have all the full-time students who have at least 4 classes, so on top of all your homework for all of your classes you are expected to study for this test that has a pass rate of around 35%. It is like the school is setting you up to fail.

I am done with my ranting….

With all the ranting I am happy to announce that I have taken the first part of the A+ exam and passed. I am scheduling the other half soon and if I pass then I will be A+ certified. Then I am getting my Network + and Server+.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time that we can see our families, relax, over eat, watch football, be thankful for what we have. That sounds like a really good deal. So before I go on I would like to say that this type of Thanksgiving sounds really really nice.

No for me I am a child of a divorced mother and father and typically this doesn’t bother me, so don’t feel bad and I realize that I am far from being the only one. If I did what all my family wanted me to on this holiday then I would be at my mom’s sides dinner about noon, and my dad’s side about 2:00 and that sounds doable.

Here is where the problems start I am also a married man and we need to attend my wife’s family also. So her mom’s side of the family is at noon, and her dad’s side is usually at 4:30 but this year they changed this to 2:00. So if you are following along you can see that we are supposed to attend 4 family dinners at the pretty much the same time.

How are you supposed to relax with this? Family members get their feelings hurt when you don’t attend but it is impossible to attend all of them. So we try to go to 3 of the 4, all though I feel bad because I don’t attend my mom’s side.

I figure that all I can do is attend what I can and hope the others don’t feel to bad even though I know they are hurt. I need to try to spend more time with them through out the year and that way when I don’t come on Thanksgiving they wont miss me as much.

Oh what am I to do? I will figure this out and have a good holiday. Hope everyone that reads this has a Great Thanksgiving.

Final Hulu Plus vs Netflix review

Well here we are this will be my final Netflix vs Hulu plus review, if you have read the other 2 reviews you probably already knows who I have chosen as the winner. I am going to let you know what I think.

While I always read that HULU wins in the TV categories and Netflix wins in the Movie categories. I don’t know if i really agree with that. I believe if you take away Hulu’s internet page and just go with what Plus offers then I think that Netflix is in a close tie.

Once Hulu Plus lets you view the internet based supply on their devices then maybe I will stick with Hulu.

Hulu Plus is available on a lot of devices but Netflix is still available on more. So in my opinion even with the price increase that Netflix did earlier this year NETFLIX is still the winner hands down.

I am slacking

When I started this blog I told myself that I wanted to post something every other day at least. I look at it now and I see that I havent posted anything for weeks. I am just becoming a huge slacker.

So lets fill you in:

I am still working full-time and at least 10 hours of overtime every week. I am still a full-time student, I have 15 credit hours this semester I think. Everything is starting to run together.

My work is going good and my grades are good, I would like to improve one class. I am not failing I just want a better grade.

The other day our instructor informed us that per the new rule at the school that we are now required to take out A+ certification test before the end of the Semester. I was angry about that and still am. This certification has know effect on our grade so they shouldnt be able to require us to take the test. I am going to take the test anyway because I want to be certified.

Oh well sorry about this random post but it is getting late and I just finished up some homework and got a ton more to do.

So until next time…

Bring it on

Today is the first day of school for the fall semester for me. I will be taking 2 classes today and 2 classes on Wednesday. On top of that I will be working a full time job. So to this I say bring on the stress. This is going to be a challenge, I beleive this is going to push be almost to the breaking point but I am not sure. My schedule on school days is leave for work at 6:30 am and get home at 10:00pm. I will be leaving work at 4:15 to be at school at 5:00.

In my vehicle I have my books, my iPad, paper and pens that should be everything I need. I am looking forward to actually having a set plan of stuff to do I like that but I am not looking forward to all this homework. I know in the end it will be worth it. When I get out of school I am going to find me a job in my field of study (If I dont find one before graduation).

I am going to school for Information Technology with a concentration on Networking. Which means I am wanting to be a specialist of connecting computers together so the can communicate with each other, and then monitoring them incase issues arise. I planning on doing this and much more. The only problem with going to school for IT (computers) is that everyone wants you to fix their computers for free. Which I dont mind to a point but when people are wanting you to fix them once a week that is a little much.

Oh well we are going to see what happens.

Remember the pain is worth the gain.

Sorry for this post it is very random, not planned out very well and it jumps all over the place. The next on will be better wrote and planned.

stress release

I find that working full-time and being a full-time student can be extremely stressful. Trying to get all of my work done along with homework and everything that needs to be done around the house is hard to do. I am always trying to find things to help me unload some of my stress so I don’t have a meltdown or blow up at someone. So what should I do? Here are a few things I find help:

  1. Classical Music: Sometimes when I listen to it and it is all I can hear it seems like I can handle anything. I don’t know what it does but this type of music is really something special.
  2. Small trips: Trips like a day trip or even a weekend trips are nice because it lets you get away from work and school. While away it is important not to think about anything that stress you out.
  3. Breathing: When I am stressed out at work I find that taking 20 seconds of me time helps. I will sit there in my chair, close my eyes and take 10 deep breaths and just let the air fill my lungs and then slowly exhale. When I am done and I reopen my eyes everything seems to be a little better.
  4. Screaming out loud and as loud as you can: Now this one sounds really goofy and I can’t even start to imagine what the neighbors would think. So the way I do this is I jump into my pool and go under water and just scream. I will come up to refill my lungs and then it is back under to scream so more. Now like I said this sounds weird but it does something amazing.
  5. Watching a movie: Doing this lets your mind just rest and watch the movie. If you are like me then you will not think about work and you will just pay attention to what is on the screen. It doesn’t matter what type you watch. Horror, comedy, drama, etc. each type will give you a little escape from reality.
  6. listening to comedians: They always say laughter is the best cure. I do believe this to be true. I listen to Pandora’s Comedy radio while working and it does wonders. It not only gives me something to listen to, it makes the day go by faster. The only problem is I think my co-workers might think I am insane because I just laugh out loud sometimes. Hey I can’t help it, I laugh when something is funny.
  7. Golfing: Whether it be playing around of golf or just going to the driving range and hitting balls this always seems to relax me. Hitting balls probably relaxes me more, due to the fact that I am not that good of a golfer. I get mad at myself after almost every shot but at the end of the day I realize that I had fun and I am pretty relaxed.
  8. Shopping: This will release some stress but only if you have the money. When I say money I mean cash or money in the bank to pay for it, I don’t mean putting it on a credit card. If you have the money to spare and you want to buy something then do it. I find that it makes me very happy when I buy something that I want, but if you are putting it on credit then you will still be happy until you get the bill and realize that you have to pay for it.

Now I am not an expert on stress relief and I still get really stressed out. I am just trying to share some of the techniques I have found to help me. It is important to blow off some steam occasionally but when you do, do it in a safe way.

Hulu Plus vs Netflix Review 1

This my first post with part of a review of my Netflix vs Hulu plus. Just to fill every one in click here.
Where should I begin, I signed up with Hulu plus 3 days ago and since I used my school email address I get a free 1 month trial, Netflix gives 2 weeks. I started using Hulu the day I got the subscription and the first thing I did was get it up and running on my Xbox 360. I played around looking to see what they have and how their software was. It seems to work a lot like Netflix. The only problem was when I picked a show to watch it load up and started playing but there wasn’t any sound. So I stopped the video and restarted my Xbox hoping it would fix the problem. I restarted the episode but still had no sound.

So from then I turned on the Playstation 3 and started the Hulu plus app. I found the same episode and started it. There was video and there was sound. I guess there is a problem with the Xbox app. The video was of good quality and the sound was decent also. So far so good. I decided to search and see if there was any shows that I really wanted to watch like the latest season of Eureka, House Hunters, Property Virgins etc. I know that all of these episodes are available using the web version of Hulu, but they are not available using Hulu Plus. This is a big problem for me. Why aren’t the shows available on the website available using Hulu Plus?

As I searched for shows there is plenty of them on there but it appeared that mostly what was available is also available using Netflix. Why would someone need to pay for both.

Netflix: 7.99 a month for streaming; Hulu Plus: 7.99 a month for streaming

Netflix: 7.99 a month for unlimited DVDs, one at a time; Hulu Plus: not available

Free trials: Hulu 1 week or 1 month with and school email address, Netflix 2 weeks

TV shows available: Hulu Plus wins this by a small margin

Movies available: Netflix wins this big time

Commercial: if you want to see them use Hulu Plus, don’t want them better use Netflix. Why do you pay for a service and them still play commercials?

User Friendly: I would say this is a tie. At least using the apps.

Popular shows (here are some examples)

  1. Glee season 1: Netflix, season 2: Hulu Plus
  2. Eureka: Both
  3. Buffy the vampire slayer: Both
  4. Angel: both
  5. Dexter: neither
  6. Modern Family: Hulu Plus
  7. The Office: both

It has only been 3 days of using both services at the same time. Right now I am leaning more towards Netflix but I have 27 days left on Hulu Plus. I am going to continue using both but I hope to see some improvements or learn some tricks or else I will be canceling my subscription to Hulu Plus.

Stay tuned for more updates on these 2 services.

Hulu Plus Vs Netflix

I have looked and looked through out the internet trying to find out which is better by everyone’s opinion. I haven’t been able to find one site that has given me a straight answer so I am going to test this myself.

A little background to start us of. It has been over a year since we have had cable TV in our house, we have survived with the help of Netflix, Traditional Movie Rental, Hulu (not Hulu Plus), and Network TV. I have been a Netflix customer for many years, and I like Netflix. I don’t like that they have raised prices though but that doesnt really affect me anyways.

So the test, I am going to start me a Hulu Plus account today. I am going to use Hulu and Netflix so I can do a even comparison. I will give weekly blogs with my findings.
